In Praise of Plants - Highly Commended
Floris van Breugel (United States of America)
Wild spring garden
Floris spent many early spring mornings walking through his local woods in Ithaca, New York, on the lookout for birds to photograph. But his prize discovery was this miniature spring glade with an azalea in bud, unfurling ferns and verdant mosses. 'It took me several days,' says Floris, 'knee-deep in swamp before I settled for this angle.' After establishing the composition, he then waited for the azalea flowers to open fully. As he set up his equipment early one May morning, a sprinkle of rain added the final magic touch.
