Animals in their Environment - Specially Commended
Henrik Lund (Finland)
Ice fox
It was early morning on the last day of January when Henrik set out to photograph dippers. It was exceptionally cold, and the river had frozen. Henrik was expecting to find the dippers fishing in the ice-free rapids close to where he lives in Lappträsk, southern Finland. What he didn't expect was to see a fox sitting on the thin river ice. 'These pearls of wildlife photography often happen when you're actually trying to achieve something else,' Henrik reflects. 'The fox may have been fishing in the rapids, or perhaps he just wanted to enjoy the last moments of warmth from the setting sun.'
Canon EOS-1D Mark III + Canon EF 500mm lens; 1/200 sec at f6.3 (+1.3 stop); ISO 500.
