2007: Nature in Black & White - Winner
Thomas Peter Peschak (Germany/South Africa)
Blacktip at dawn
'I was diving around a rocky reef system off South Africa's KwaZulu Natal coast. It's only calm enough for split-level underwater photography in the morning, when the light is low. After half an hour photographing blacktips cruising near the surface, one shark gaped, a mild threat display, but it was directed at another shark, not at me.' Few of the 500 species of shark are aggressive. Blacktip sharks are shy and will rarely approach humans. Like other sharks, they are sensitive to electric currents, using them to locate prey. This species is heavily fished by anglers and is important for dive tourism.
Nikon D2X + Nikon 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye lens; 1/125 sec at f20; 2x Inon underwater strobes; Subal housing.
