2007 Animal Behaviour: Mammals - Specially Commended
Anup Shah (United Kingdom)
Zebra crossing
'It was an expensive shot in some ways. It took time to set up the remote system in the Serengeti, in Tanzania, and money to service my muddy camera afterwards. But it was cheap in terms of satisfaction. I wanted to create this ant's-eye view of a large, powerful animal and a sense of its flighty nature.' Zebras belong to the same group as horses and asses, known as equids. Herds of plains zebra, as pictured, dot the grasslands and dry savannahs of east Africa, usually one male and several females. A mare usually leads the group to drink. If one animal senses danger, the herd charges away, kicking up mud and water.
Canon EOS 1V + 20mm lens; Fujichrome Velvia 100F.
