Explorer backpacks

Get the most out of your family visit to the Museum by borrowing an Explorer Backpack free of charge. Explorer Backpacks are filled with activities and fun stuff to make your visit more enjoyable and worthwhile.

Use the pack contents and activity booklet to follow your own adventure through the Museum galleries. Alternatively, simply get into the role of an explorer with the explorer hat, binoculars and magnifying glass.

Suitable for families with children aged 7 years and under.

Each backpack contains:

  • drawing kit

  • Primates - meet our closest relatives and consider what similarities you share.
  • Mammals - follow the clues of hair and teeth to find the mystery animal.
  • Monsters - track down a monster that lived millions of years ago.
  • Birds - match the beak and feathers to identify the correct bird.
  • Oceans - explore life underwater and follow the clues to catch the right fish.
  • Wildlife garden - investigate the diverse colours and shapes of nature in the Museum garden.
Important points
  • Backpacks are free of charge and do not need to be booked. A form of ID is required to borrow them, such as a driving license or debit card.
  • Explorer backpacks are suitable for children under 7 years old.
  • Backpacks are available between 10.00 and 17.00 from the central hall information desk.
