A halloween crab (Gecarcinus guadratus). These nocturnal land crabs live in small burrows in the coastal jungle of Costa Rica. However, they must travel back to the ocean to reproduce.

Getting around the Museum

Museum entrances

The Museum has 3 entrances. The main entrance on Akeman Street has steps, the Park Street and Car Park entrances are step-free, and best for entry with wheelchairs and pushchairs. The Car Park entrance provides access via a lift.

  • Main entrance (Akeman Street)
    Eight steps to the entrance lobby
  • Park Street accessible entrance
    There are no steps into the ground floor of the Museum.
  • Car Park accessible entrance
    There are no steps into this entrance hall. Access is via the lift to the ground, first and second floors of the Museum.

Step-free access is currently available for all main floors of the Museum. This includes:

  • Galleries 1 to 6
  • Rothschild  Room
  • unisex toilet
  • Zebra Café

The shop and Discovery Room are also on the ground floor but are up one step. Our staff will be happy to provide a ramp on request.

Wheelchairs

A Wheelchair is available on loan. Please ask a member of staff when you arrive.

Guide dogs and other assistance dogs

We welcome assistance dogs. There are grassed areas around the museum's perimeter and water is available outside the Zebra Café. For more information please call the information desk on +44 (0)20 7942 6171.

If you have particular needs in the event of an emergency evacuation, please let us know when you arrive.
