The Museum is evolving

Science Fund

Invest in the Evolution Campaign's Science Fund to support a state-of-the-art Molecular Facility for vital research.

Advancing our science

Our scientists are engaged in a massive endeavour to preserve and study more than 70 million specimens in order to increase global knowledge of the biological diversity they represent. This impacts on decision-making at a national and international level in biomedicine, species conservation and sustainable development.

Museum researchers have contributed to breakthroughs in the extraction and analysis of molecular DNA bringing about major changes in our understanding of species and their place in the ‘tree of life’. They need funding to continue to be at the forefront of these scientific advances, for instance in the fight against insect-borne diseases.

The major aims of the Molecular Facility will be to:

  • ensure our molecular collections are managed and stored for optimum accessibility
  • secure the long-term preservation of our irreplaceable collection of DNA
  • build a centralised facility making it easier for our scientists and external researchers to access, greatly increasing the efficiency of their vital work.
