Deals with the methodology of obtaining phylogenies from DNA data with a substantial practical component in which students gain experience in DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction site analysis, and sequencing. Associated lectures deal with principles, and data analysis.
Applications of DNA to both within and between species questions, neutral theory and molecular clocks, maximum likelihood, sequence alignment, recombination, horizontal gene transfer and problems of introgression.
