Module 9

Palaeontology and stratigraphy

This module examines the role palaeontological data can play in taxonomic studies, outlines the strengths and weaknesses of the fossil record, and shows how it can provide data on changing patterns of biodiversity over geological time.

The ways in which types of fossil data may lead to substantial revisions of phylogenetic hypotheses are explored.

It also covers the species concepts as applied to fossils

  • stratigraphy and dating
  • estimating stratigraphic error
  • role of fossils in phylogeny reconstruction
  • biodiversity over geological time

Duration: 1.5 weeks

Module 10: Field course
