Module 4

Molecular systematics

This module deals with the methodology of obtaining phylogenies from DNA data. It includes a substantial practical component in which students gain experience in:

  • DNA extraction
  • polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • restriction site analysis
  • sequencing

Associated lectures deal with principles, data analysis and applications of DNA to :

  • both within and between species questions
  • neutral theory and molecular clocks
  • maximum likelihood, sequence alignment
  • recombination
  • horizontal gene transfer
  • problems of introgression

Duration: 5 weeks

Module 5: Ordination (biometric) techniques in taxonomy
