Module 2

 Phylogenetic reconstruction: theory and practice

This module explores the theory and practice of phylogeny reconstruction using various methods, from data collection and character coding to computerised analysis using several widely-used software packages.

The practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages of each method are considered and the module pays particular attention to different types of character used for reconstructing phylogenies.

Other topics dealt with in depth include:

  • consensus and weighting methods
  • character optimisation
  • tests for congruence.
