Research interests

I am interested in host-parasite cospeciation, using Gyrodactylus parasites (Monogenea, Platyhelminthes) from gobies (Pomatoschistus, Gobiidae) as a model system. This mainly involved species-level phylogenies but recently COI mtDNA has been included such that the phylogeographic pattern of the parasite can be compared with that of the host. Complemented with population genetic analyses, this should increase our knowledge on Gyrodactylus transmission strategies, the population dynamics and speciation patterns.

More recently, I am assessing the phylogenetic and population genetic content of the mitochondrial genome of Gyrodactylus salaris, a pathogen of Salmo Salar, especially affecting wild and cultured salmon parr in Norway.

Current activities

  • Characterize the mt genome of Gyrodactylus salaris and G. derjavini
  • Identifying mt SNPs and other suitable genetic markers for strain diagnostics and population genetics
  • Phylogeography of Gyrodactylus spp. infecting gobies
