Research interests

I am mainly interested in the development and application of molecular genetic methodologies and diagnostic assays which increase our understanding of the biology and control of tropical diseases. The techniques are often applied for either taxonomic or phylogenetic purposes which have provided a deeper insight into the epidemiology of schistosomiasis as well as trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. Lately, I have become increasingly interested in the use of GIS and RS for mapping potential transmission zones and more general use for disease surveillance, especially in the context of polyparasitism e.g. the interplay of schistosomiasis with malaria. Fieldwork is an essential component in my research and I hope to bridge the gap between field and laboratory.

Current activities

  • Epidemiology and genetic diversity within Schistosoma.

  • Developing and delivering better public health education for schistosomiasis.
  • Infant schistosomiasis and relationship with malaria.
  • The taxonomy and molecular evolution of Bulinus and Biomphalaria species in East Africa, Madagascar and Indian Ocean area islands.
  • Phylogeography of Lymnaea natalensis on Madagascar and epidemiology of Fasciola gigantica.
  • Genetic diversity and sexual recombination in human trypanosomes.
