Marine Micropalaeontology
Coccolithophores are minute (about 0.01mm) single-celled organisms but create strikingly complex structures - coccoliths - out of intricately sculptured calcite crystals. There are pragmatic reasons for analysing the process of coccolith formation and deciphiring data provided by them but coccoliths are also rather beautiful. Here are a few of my favourite images. They are all scanning electron micrographs which have been edited in photoshop, to give a clean background and apply some colour.

a dissolving coccolith, in this case a result of poor sample preparation, but it shows how vulnerable they are
My research is predominantly focussed on coccolithophores a group of unicellular planktonic algae which produce calcareous platelets, coccoliths. Coccoliths form a major component of open ocean sediments and so have an enormously abundant fossil record. They are very widely used fossils both for biostratigraphy (determining the age of sediments) and as indicators of past oceanographic conditions. In addition modern coccolithophores are an important component of the marine food chain, play significant roles in the global biogeochemical cycles of carbon and sulphur, and form spectacular blooms readily imaged by satellites. As a result they have attracted inter-disciplinary research interest. My research has largely focussed on integrating knowledge of their biodiversity and evolution with study of their biology, molecular biology, biomineralization and biogeochemistry through a wide range of collaborations. The main projects I am working on currently are:
Ocean acidification - a major side-effect of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere is that the pH of the ocean is deceasing. The change so far is only about 0.1pH units, however, by 2100 a pH drop of 0.4 units is likely. This would have major impacts on marine life, and especially calcifying organisms such as corals- and coccolithophores. In the context of a major UK programme on ocean acidification I will be working with a large team on the impact of ocean acidification on pelagic calcification through a cruise-based programme including observations across natural carbonate-saturation gradients and deck incubation experiments. Coccolithophores are the prime focus of this project and I will be researching the effects of ocean acidification on coccolith morphology and whether this is modified by ecotype selection.
collecting seawater samples from a research ship.
COMBINE - COccolithophores Morphology, BIogeography, geNetics and Ecology database - this is an EU funded project via a Marie-Curie Fellowship supporting post-doctoral researcher Martine Couapel. The prime aims of the project are to provide baseline data on the autecology of coccolithophore species in order to use them in palaeoenvironmental analysis and baseline data on the modern biogeographic distribution of coccolithophores to allow assessment of changes in the historical past. This is being achieved by a combination of new research on Atlantic coccolithophores and databasing of coccolithophore occurrence data from a range of sources. In addition, with collaborators in Roscoff, we are working on integration of traditional morphological identifications with data from environmental DNA samples.
screen shot of the Nannotax website
Nannotax - there is immense potential for delivering taxonomic information via the internet, and increasingly this is needed by scientists whether in academia or industrial environments such as micropalaeontology. For nannofossils I am developing Nannotax a web-database of data and images of nannofossils. This is the prime online source of data on nannofossil and is rapidly being expanded with a range of colleagues. The project is part of EDIT, the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy
