Dear Bates

Allow me to congratulate you on the first rate article on your Book2 in the "Times" this morning. It will I sh[oul].d think finish off your 1st. Ed[ition]. rapidly. I hope you will find out who wrote it as it is really well done.

I enclose you my list of localities & abbreviations.

Will you be so good as to [[2]] send me Mr. Bakewells address, as I wish to write & offer him my Heteromera3.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

H. W. Bates Esq

1. "| 63" is written in pencil after the date in an unknown hand, and probably denotes the year 1863.

2. The book referred to is The Naturalist on the River Amazons.

3. The second "r" of this word looks like a "t". Heteromera are a group of beetles (Coleoptera).
