5, Westbourne Grove Terrace, W.

July 1st. 1862

To Professor Schlegel1

Being now engaged in the study of my birds from the Malay Islands, I take the liberty of addressing you on the subject of one or two desiderata with which you can perhaps supply me.

I possess a species of Pitta2 very like one figured by [[2]] Fenwick (Pl[ate]. Col[eoptera]. [page] 591) from Timor, but as my specimen comes from a locality very distant from that island & does not exactly agree with the figure I suppose it to be a different bird. I should however much wish to obtain a specimen of the Timor bird if you have duplicates, for more minute comparison.

I also desire the Pitta of Ternate (P. cyanonota G. R. Gray) lately sent you I believe by Dr. Bernstein (who I had the pleasure of meeting there.

In return for these two [[3]] birds I would be glad to give you birds which are quite new or wanting to your collection.

I remain Sir | Your obed[ien]t. Ser[van]t. | Alfred R. Wallace[signature]

1. Hermann Schlegel (1804-1884). German ornithologist and herpetologist.

2. A family (Pittadae) of passerine birds mainly found in Asia and Australasia.
