11th Dec[ember] [1903]

Dr. A. Russel Wallace

Dear Sir

We are obliged for you letter of the 9th inst[ance]. Of course the royalty on a Colonial Edition is very little more than nominal, but we fear that were we to attempt to make a price for your book in this Colonial issue that was really considerably higher than the ordinary Colonial issues (which contain a very large percentage of the best books of the day, including also serious literature) the result would be that our sales would be exceedingly small -- not sufficient to recoup expenses and the trouble of the separate Colonial Edition.
