My Lord,

With reference to [1 word illeg] despatch No[number] 40 of the 9th instant, desiring me to request the Spanish Gov[ernmen]t to be so good as to cause such instructions to be opened[?] to the competent authorities as will facilitate the views which Mr Wallace has of visiting, in his projected scientific expedition to the Eastern Archipelago, certain possessions of H. C. M. in the Eastern Seas, I have the honor[sic] to transmit to [1 word illeg] copy & translation of a communication which General Lersandi has addressed to me in answer to my application.

[1 word illeg] will perceive that N. E. informs me that under the date of the 15th instant the necessary orders were given to the Colonial1 [[2]] office directing proper instructions to be issued to the authorities in the Philippines to afford to Mr Wallace any assistance & protection he may require.
