A collection of images of freshwater and terrestrial algae (apart from diatoms) of the United Kingdom - Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Northern Ireland.
Taxa from slightly brackish-water environments and marine blue-green algae are also included. The only colourless forms considered are all dinoflagellates (pyrrophytes).
The online evolved from a CD-ROM of algal images and habitats compiled and edited by PV York, DM John and LR Johnson produced to accompany.
The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles (2002), edited by DM John, BA Whitton and AJ Brook and published by Cambridge University Press.
The publication was the main outcome of a collaborative project between The British Phycological Society and the Natural History Museum, London.
Search by Taxon or Phylum to find information, images and references about individual algae.
