Vladimir Chavtur is head of the Laboratory of Planktonology at the Institute of Marine Biology Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok. He was initially educated at the Far Eastern State University (Vladivostok), and in 1970 began research in the Institute of Marine Biology Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (Vladivostok). He is currently holds Professorships in the Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University (Vladivostok), the Far Eastern State University (Vladivostok) and Kamchatka Technical State University (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka). His principle expertise is in the taxonomy, zoogeography and ecology of recent pelagic and benthic ostracods (Ostracoda-Myodocopa). He has participated in many expeditions to a wide range of latitudes in the Pacific Ocean both north and south. In spite of heavy teaching commitments he has authored over 50 scientific papers, including seven monographs, which have made significant contributions to our systematic understanding of both halocyprid and cladocopid ostracods.
