Kasia Blachowiak-Samolyk
After completing her Ph.D. on the distribution and population structure of pelagic ostracods around the Antarctic Peninsula, at the University of Gdansk in 1997, she began working under the Polish Academy of Sciences umbrella. Initially she studied in the genetics laboratory, but then joined the Baltic Sea monitoring group as a zooplankton specialist. In 2002 she was appointed to a permanent position in Department of Marine Ecology at the Institute of Oceanology, Sopot, where her research is focusing on Arctic zooplankton, which is proving to be complimentary to her earlier studies on Southern Ocean zooplankton and so is extending her interests in the polar regions. She is an author of several publication dealing mainly with pelagic Antarctic Ostracoda and nowadays also with Arctic zooplankton. Thanks to a British-Polish Exchange Fellowship she has begun an exceptional collaboration with Martin Angel, which led to the creation of the web-based Atlas of Southern Ocean Planktonic Ostracods, revising the taxonomy of some key species and culminating in the development of this atlas.
