Notes

24 records

This species was described by Ellis as a Conchoecia species from abyssopelagic samples collected in the North Atlantic. Superficially it resembles P. dasyophthalma in that the right asymmetrical gland is displaced to the midpoint of the ventral margin and it also has large, sharp-edged shoulder vaults. Chavtur (1977) published drawings of a species he identified as dasyophthalma collected in the N.E.Pacific during the Vityaz-39 cruise, which also looks to be this species. It has only been collected when samplers have been towed at depths >3000m (note the depths of many of the early deep samples are recorded as metres of wire out (mwo) and there is no reliable way of converting mwo to a precise depth). It has also been identified as a ‘swimmer’ in sediments traps deployed at depths of 3000m in the Porcupine Sea Bight to the southwest of the UK. Like most other very deep-living species, it is extremely fragile and specimens are seldom collected in good condition.
