Notes

207 records

This is a characteristically shaped species that lacks spines at the posterior dorsal corner. The height of its carapace height is small relative to its length, and the dorsal and ventral margins are almost straight. Müller (1906) classified it in his ‘spinifera group’, which Poulsen (1973) re-classified as Paraconchoecia. It has been recorded from all oceans mostly in temperate and tropical latitudes. The map shows that most records are from latitudes <35°, but in the Northeast Atlantic it extends north to 50°. The single record from the Norwegian Sea must be regarded as dubious. Poulsen (1973) reported it from both the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and it has also turned up in Snellius samples collected in the Banda Sea. The bathymetric profiles show that at both 30°N and 40°N the populations were centred around 400-800m and were non-migratory. At 18°N the population had shoaled slightly to 300-600m.
