This is the smallest species in Müller’s ‘curta group’, was reclassified as a Microconchoecia species by Poulsen (1973), perpetuating Müller’s (1906) misspelling of Claus’s genus. It was originally been described as a subspecies of Conchoecia clausii (= M. curta) by Claus to which it is very similar in overall appearance. No doubt this confusion continues. Different authors have given different accounts of the extent to which the carapace sculpturing is expressed, and this suggests that there may be further cryptic species within the concepts of this species and M. curta. Where M. curta andechinulata co-occur in the same water column this, the smaller species, tends to have the shallower range. There is also inconsistency in reports as to whether or not these species release bioluminescent secretions into the water. It is possible that one species may be luminescent and not the other.
