Notes

68 records

This is a poorly known species that is occasionally encountered in small numbers in the epipelagic and shallow mesopelagic zone of tropical and subtropical oceans. Poulsen (1973) reported a single record of this species at 46°N in the North Atlantic. The juveniles are immediately recognisable because the shoulder vaults are fringed with pegs, but these pegs are shed in the A-1 or adult instars. Leveau (1966) described the juveniles as a new species Conchoecia pectinata – only one other species Conchoecia macrocheira has had its juvenile instars confused in the same way. Living animals are relatively intensely coloured orange-red compared with most other epipelagic halocyprids. Its known latitudinal range is 44°S to 46°N, but the majority of the records are from latitudes <30°.
