Notes

14 records

A poorly known species, which was originally described as an Archiconchoecia species from the Southern Ocean by Deevey (1982) and subsequently reported by her as occurring at deep bathypelagic depths the subtropical North Atlantic. Chavtur and Stovbun (2003) have recently revised the Archiconchoecini and placed this species in the Archiconchoecemma together with orientalis. This species is another example of a deep living ostracod species having a very broad latitudinal range and possibly being cosmopolitan. Interesting questions then arise as to the degree to which there is genetic exchange between these populations and the value of such species as indicators of the spread of deep water in the Southern Ocean and of the spread of North Atlantic Deep Water throughout the global ocean. The Atlantic specimens are slightly smaller than Deevey's original length data for specimens from the Southern Ocean (♀ 1.40-1.44; ♂ 1.3-1.4).
