India and China

Some of the largest single collections held in the Library are from India and China, dating from the late 18th to the mid-19th century.

Many artworks were produced by local artists and commissioned by officers working for the East India Company.

Large collections of specimens and drawings were amassed by John Reeves in Canton, and William Roxburgh, John Fleming and Thomas Hardwicke in Calcutta. These were then studied by the scientific community in Europe.
