We ask that you provide 48 hours notice (two working days) when requesting items, to ensure they are collected and awaiting your arrival.

Visiting us

You can make an appointment to arrange to view Museum Archive materials in the Library and Archives Reading Room. We may be able to send copies out to you, but there is a charge for this service.


We welcome enquiries about the history of the Museum and the Archival collections, however we are unable to carry out extensive research on your behalf.

Did you know?

Opening ceremony of Oldfield Thomas Lift, June 6th 1930.

When Museum Curator Michael Rogers Oldfield Thomas died in 1929 , he left money in his will for a lift so that staff could avoid climbing the stairs to reach their offices.

The lift is still in use today, to the left of the door as you enter Hintze Hall.
