Conservation staff undertake a range of preparation and conservation work, providing primary care for specimens across the Museum's science departments.

This includes preventative conservation of vulnerable or delicate specimens, and restorative projects that aim to repair or improve the condition of Museum objects.

  • Stony-iron meteorite from the Atacama Desert, Chile.

An important part of our work is assessing the risk to Museum collections and defining standards for their care.

  • Oxynoticeras oxynotum, ammonite fossil.

The centre has a worldwide reputation in the development of new techniques for stabilising, restoring and conserving specimens.
