Memories of War

The Museum prepared itself for World War II by ensuring its specimens were protected. This involved a process of removing as many as possible, particularly the type specimens, to a place of safety. As a result, those seeking a sanctuary at the Museum may indeed have found themselves sitting amongst butterfly cabinets in its air-raid shelters.

Many Museum staff were drafted for the War and have since spoken of the unimaginable horrors of warfare. Listen as Graham Howarth talks about his ordeal as prisoner of war in Changi, Singapore, during his military service.
