Museum History

Since its opening in 1881, the Museum has grown in terms of its collections, its understanding of the natural world, and its approaches to museum display. Hand tools have since been mostly replaced by computers, dioramas have been replaced by interactive installations, and the Museum has extended its outreach activities to trade and road-shows.

From its connection to the Royal Family, to the restructuring of the Museum's science departments, our staff have witnessed both the positive and negative effects that changes can bring to a cultural institution. Listen to our Museum staff reflect on the various changes that have been made in the Museum, and their opinions on these changes.
