As a tropical butterfly specialist, John has been on many field trips to the islands of the South Pacific. While on a recent collecting trip to Papua New Guinea, John noted that this expedition to some of the remote islands east of the main island of New Guinea includes many of the world's most spectacular butterflies, including Queen Alexandra's Birdwing, the largest butterfly species in the world.
Planning such remote fieldwork is a logistical challenge. John works with local people to organise his collecting expeditions and explains how he is sensitive to the various cultural differences that have changed the nature of fieldwork practice.
