Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Instrument
Varian
Elemental range
Li to U, see Periodic Table
Main applications

Ultra-trace elements, including REE.
Sample media

Sample solutions of rocks, minerals, waters, organics.

The instrument differs from many other quadropole ICP-MS instruments in that it uses an ion mirror to reflect the ion beam through 90 degrees, focusing the analyte ions into the quadrupole with great efficiency and giving rise to an extremely high sensitivity and very low background. The detector has a large dynamic range and achieves linear performance from parts per trillion up to hundreds of parts per million in solution. This makes it ideal for a wide range of applications and matrices. It also benefits from a high sample throughput and its operating software is user friendly and easy to use.

Applications of the ICP-MS include, among others: the ultra-trace level determination of metals that present common interference problems in conventional ICP-MS (Fe, Ni, Cr, V, etc), low levels determination of REE in geochemical samples and determination of trace elements in solutions with high dissolved solids (e.g. seawater).
