Two elemental
analysers can be used to determine carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen
and sulphur in solid and liquid samples. A Perkin Elmer 240b
is suitable for micro samples from 1 to 50 mg and the Thermo
Finnigan EA1112 can accommodate larger samples up to several
hundred mg. Samples are combusted in oxygen and the liberated
gases are separated before detection thus enabling total H,
C, N and S to be determined. Organic/inorganic carbon ratios
can be determined by acid treatment of the sample.
