This Darwin Initiative project, established in 2003, is a collaborative venture between the Natural History Museum (London), the Belize Forest Department and the Belize Botanic Garden. Its broad objectives are to better understand the systematics and ecology of Chamaedorea and to develop Belize's capacity to manage sustainably the economically important species of this genus (termed xaté), whose leaves are cut commercially for foliage
