Biodiversity and WorldMap

Details of installation

The following are detailed installation notes, which should not normally be needed:

After installation, the minimum files needed to run WORLDMAP for Windows are as follows:

\WORLDMAP\

WM41.EXE executable program file
WORLDMAP.MAP information on maps and grids supported
WORLDMAP.@17 map data for equal-area map of the world

Example data files are included for:

\WORLDMAP\EQUAL\ (equal-area world grid)

SIB.DAT sibiricus-group bumble bees

\WORLDMAP\OREGON\ (equal-area oregon grid)

GAP.DAT vertebrate test data

NOTE: The preliminary trial data for Oregon vertebrates were compiled for tests of area selection methods by the Oregon Gap Analysis project. They were compiled by Richard Hamilton and are included with the permission of Blair Csuti and Stephen Polasky. The grid squares are an approximation to the original hexagonal grid cells.

If they are not already present, the files [\worldmap\]

WORLDMAP.OPP (for option settings)

and [\worldmap\equal\]

WORLDMAP.LOC (for gridcell names)

will be created when the program first runs. This re-establishes the default mapping options and provides an empty list of gridcell names.

The current demo also includes the software for Britain:

\WORLDMAP\

BRITMAP.EXE executable program file

then it should also include the following files:

\WORLDMAP\BRITAIN\ (10 km British national grid)

EXAMPLE.DAT
WORLDMAP.@50 map data for map of Britain
WORLDMAP.LOC gridcell codes
WORLDMAP.SQS active grid cells - do not edit

The best results will be obtained if you use a large monitor (21 inches) and if your Windows installation is set to a desktop resolution of at least 1024 by 768 pixels with small fonts in at least 256 colours.

To change these settings:

  • In Windows 95, click on 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control Panel', 'Display' and 'Settings', selecting settings appropriate to your requirements.
  • In Windows NT v3.5, click on 'Main', 'Control Panel' and 'Display', selecting settings appropriate to your requirements.
  • You will need to have an appropriate graphics card (hardware) and screen drivers (software) in your machine. In case of difficulty, contact your computer supplier for further information.
