Below is a list of terms used in these
pages. This glossary is taken from Day 1967. A monograph on the Polychaeta of
Southern Africa.
- Abdomen
- The region of the body posterior to the thorax and sometimes followed by a caudal region or tail.

- a very stout projecting seta homologous with other setae but similar in thickness to an internal aciculum
- aciculum, acicula, aciculae
- a stout internal chitinous rod which supports one of the two lobes of a parapodium

- projection from the pygidium or terminal segment on which the anus opens
- antenna
- a sensory projection arising from the anterior or dorsal surface of the prostomium

- a segment without a foot or parapodium

- a stout seta with a smooth shaft and a tuft of fine hairs at the end

- a gill, usually a outgrowth from the body which pocesses elements of the blood system
