What is the Dictionary of UK species?

The Dictionary of UK species is aims to provide standard reference names for all species of flora and fauna in the UK, bringing all of the names together in one place.

Around 80,000 species of animals, plants, fungi and single-celled organisms occur in the UK.

The Dictionary of UK species is formed by gathering species names from comprehensive and authoritative checklists complied by government agencies, scientific experts and conservation organisation.

 Specialists create checklists of species names for

  • defined taxonomic groups
  • species affected by a piece of legislation
  • species conservation status

The Dictionary of UK species allows you to

    The Dictionary of UK species contains lists of particular taxonomic groups, compiled by specialists, together with more general lists covering legislation and conservation status. If for example you are interested in finding a list of protected species or UK butterflies why not search our checklists?

Notice 

The Dictionary of UK species is currently providing data for 57 out of 100 taxonomic groups. The data is being released in stages, as we convert the existing content to an improved data structure.

You may also find some of the larger data sets are slow to load and solutions are currently being investigated.

This site is replacing the previous version of the online National Biodiversity Network's Species Dictionary.
