Coastal Biodiversity in Ranong

Education and Outreach

One of the main objectives of this project it to make the information collected available to local communities, conservationists and governmental organisations, as well as scientists.

To achieve this the project has a number of education and outreach activities including a series of meetings with local communities. The Ranong based project staff are also involved in a number of local initiatives and environmental forums. Each year there is an Open Day where project staff organise a series of exhibits, activities and events. All the local community are invited. The project also has a regular newsletter edited by Nanirun Khamgrai (Miow) who acts as liaison with the local communities. The newsletter is sent to all the local people, schools and to various NGOs and environmental groups around Thailand.

Schools

In addition, the project has an Education Officer whose job it is to liaise with local schools. An important part of the project's interaction with students will be to design a series of lessons supported by activity packs and teaching notes. The aim is to support local curricula and provide added support through school visits and visits to the Centre.

Marine Biodiversity Youth Camps

Kampaun District has provided funds to support a series of Marine Biodiversity Youth Camps where groups of students come to the Centre and take part in a variety of lessons, activities, songs and games. The object of these Camps is to raise awareness of the local marine life and its importance. After training given by staff from Wildlife Fund Thailand, the Centre's staff held the first camp at the end of June. 45 students participated in a two-day Camp. Coastal Biodiversity in Ranong project staff helped provide information and assistance in the lessons and fieldwork.
