The primary objective of the Coastal Biodiversity in Ranong project is to provide both primary biodiversity information and training to underpin biodiversity assessment and long-term environmental monitoring. Before a biodiversity assessment can be carried out, which will enable scientists to develop a long-term monitoring scheme, it is essential that species and their abundance is noted for the key habitat types.
During year 1 and 2 of the project there will be a month long intensive field campaign involving scientists from NHM, PML, Thai researchers, volunteers from local NGOs and students from Kasetsart University. The field campaign will carry out surveys and mapping of key non-coral habitats within a 30 km radius of the Ranong Marine Research Centre, together with samples of key/indicator species and environmental data.
As part of the project we aim to produce a checklist of the dominant fauna and flora of the study area. To-date we have produced provisional lists based on previous checklists and recent work done in the area. The lists should be considered as provisional and will be updated regularly as new data are generated.
