Plant Information & Technology Transfer for Nepal

Publications related to the Flora of Nepal

Knowledge on Nepalese plants in the recent nomenclatural framework, based on these specimens appeared for the first time in N. Wallich's Tentamen Florae Nepalensis (1824) and D. Don's Prodromus Florae Nepalensis (1825). A more complete treatment on Nepalese plants is found in J.D. Hooker's Flora of British India, Vols. 1-7 (1872-1897). Since then several books, articles and notes have been published, by the experts of national and international institutions, related to Flora of Nepal. Among these publications An Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal, Vols 1-3 published by the British Museum (Natural History) between 1978-1982 is regarded as the most authentic and complete treatment on the Nepalese plants. The books were published as a result of the collaboration with University of Tokyo, which was also assisted by some Nepalese botanists.

The Department of Plant Resources, formerly Department of Medicinal Plants, was established in 1965 with the main purpose of exploration, documentation of plant resources and publication of Flora of Nepal. To fulfil the above goal, a national Herbarium was established in 1971 and housed about 150,000 specimens so far. Within a period of three decades, several local floras and fascicles of small families as an account of the Flora of Nepal has been published.
