Environmental evaluation/research will be carried out under work packages WP4, WP5 and WP6 of the MinUrals project.
WP4 - Control of environmental impacts The aim is to use a multidisciplinary approach to characterise and model the processes liberating and migrating heavy metals and other pollutants into the biosphere, to assess the impact of mining and related activities on the environment, and to identify an approach for the rapid diagnoses of polluted sites. Three main sites, in different climatic zones of the Republic of Bashkortostan and Chelyabinskaya region, have been selected as representative of environmental problems affecting the Urals:
- Karabash, with large copper smelter and abandoned mine workings
- Uchaly, with benefication mill and abandoned and working mines
- Sibay, with benefication mill and abandoned and working mines
