Evaluation of the local mining-related risks to the environment

Environmental evaluation/research will be carried out under work packages WP4, WP5 and WP6 of the MinUrals project.

WP4 - Control of environmental impacts The aim is to use a multidisciplinary approach to characterise and model the processes liberating and migrating heavy metals and other pollutants into the biosphere, to assess the impact of mining and related activities on the environment, and to identify an approach for the rapid diagnoses of polluted sites. Three main sites, in different climatic zones of the Republic of Bashkortostan and Chelyabinskaya region, have been selected as representative of environmental problems affecting the Urals:

  • Karabash, with large copper smelter and abandoned mine workings
  • Uchaly, with benefication mill and abandoned and working mines
  • Sibay, with benefication mill and abandoned and working mines

Catalogue of potentially reactive waste dumps

Tools to be used/developed for environmental diagnostics

Russian standards for water quality, air quality, soil quality and foodstuffs Field sampling

WP5 - GIS-environmental constraints The aim is to provide a tool for environmental risk management that identifies potential pollution sources, pollutant vectors and sensitive target areas. It will be an evolutionary tool into which data will be entered well beyond the life of the project and will act as a decision aid, notably for defining orientations for future legislation specifically adapted to the situation of the Urals. WP6 - Integration into the GIS-environmental constraints The integration of all data for predicting the potential effects of mining operations on the environment for each site studied.
