1. Background and objectives

COST is the abbreviation for 'Coopération européenne dans la domaine de la Recherche scientifique et technique', translated into English as 'European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research'.  The European Union's COST programme was established in 1971 and now includes 25 European states.

COST Action 833, 'Mange and Myiasis of Livestock' came into existence in 1998, as a natural follow on to COST Action 811, 'Improvements in the control methods for warble fly in livestock'.  Action 833 will run until the year 2002 and address three objectives:

  •  to develop accurate means of diagnosis of mange and myiasis of livestock and so prevent suffering and improve animal welfare

  •  to develop effective and environmentally sensitive methods of treatment and control of these diseases and so increase economic performance and decrease pressure on the environment

  •  to increase the epidemiological knowledge of these diseases in order to facilitate control and eradication programmes
