The Echinoid Directory

Prosalenia Vadet, Nicolleau & Pineau, 1996, p.84

Diagnostic Features
  • Periproct lying along the anterior-posterior axis; larger than suranal plate.
  • Apical disc small and raised above the corona; plates tuberculate but without obvious sutural pits.
  • Single large suranal plate incorporated into disc. All ocular plates exsert.
  • Gonopores close to outer margin of genital plates.
  • Ambulacral plating trigeminate orally and at ambitus; aboral portions with tubercle on each element, but every third one enlarged. Aboral ambulacral tubercles imperforate; oral tubercles perforate and crenulate.
  • Interambulacral tubercles crenulate and perforate.
  • Peristome larger than apical disc.
  • Spines unknown.
Distribution
Middle Jurassic (Callovian), France.
Name gender feminine
Type
Acrosalenia marcoui Cotteau, 1879, by original designation.
Species Included
  • Only the type species.
Classification and/or Status

Carinacea, Calycina, Salenioida; stem group Saleniidae.

Monotypic.

Remarks

Close to Acrosalenia but distinguished from that genus by its dicyclic apical disc (in Acrosalenia the periproct is bounded by ocular plates I and V). Distinguished from Hyposaleniinae by having perforate tubercles. Distinguished from Heterosalenia by having the periproct symmetrically placed along the anterior-posterior axis. Pseudosalenia is very similar, with an identical apical disc structure, but has simple ambulacral plating at the ambitus and its adoral ambulacral tubercles are perforate and crenulate.
