The Echinoid Directory

Weisbordella Durham, 1954, p. 682

Diagnostic Features
  • Test ovate in outline with rounded margin. Oral surface slightly concave, aboral surface weakly conical towards centre.
  • 4 gonopores; apical disc subcentral.
  • Petals strongly lanceolate and closed distally. Every other plate in the petal a demiplate.
  • Food grooves feebly developed and only present close to the peristome.
  • Ambulacral very much wider than interambulacral zones at ambitus.
  • Periproct oral, towards posterior margin. Opening bounded by first and second pairs of interambulacral plates.
  • Tubercles on oral surface concentrated around the margins leaving a central naked zone.
Distribution
Late Eocene of the Caribbean and southern USA.
Name gender feminine
Type
Peronella caribbeana Weisbord, 1934, by original designation.
Species Included
  • W. caribbeana (Weisbord, 1934); Late Eocene, Cuba and Florida.
  • W. dalli (Twitchell 1915); Late Eocene, southern USA.
  • W. mirabilis (Jackson 1922); Late Eocene, Jamaica.
Classification and/or Status

Clypeasteroida; Scutellina; Laganiformes; Laganidae; Neolaganinae

Presumed monophyletic.

Remarks

Durham distinguished this genus from Neolaganum only on account of its supposed lack of a groove for its hydropores. However, the specimen illustrated has its hydropores in a small, branched groove, as in Neolaganum. The slightly sunken nature of the oral surface, short, strongly lanceolate petals and the sparcity of tubercles surrounding the peristome are more significant differences. In petal structure Weisbordella closely resembles Durhamella, but that taxon has five, not four gonopores.
