Diagnostic Features	Test of medium size, subcircular to subovate in outline, domed in profile with relatively flat adoral surface. Apical disc subcentral to anterior; monobasal, with four gonopores. Petals well developed; straight or bowed and open distally. Pore-pairs small, subconjugate, with a varying degree of transverse elongation in the outer pores. The two columns of pore-pairs in each petal of unequal lengths; pores beneath petals single. Peristome subcentral, pentagonal, transverse, wider than long. Periproct inframarginal and transverse; not sunken. Phyllodes short but generally strongly developed, single pored, with two or three series in each half ambulacrum, plus scattered pores in between. Bourrelets weakly developed, forming a distinct well leading to the peristome opening. Buccal pores present. Tubercles the same size adorally as adapically.

Remarks	More than 285 species have been assigned to this genus (Roman, 1965, p. 689). Due to the very large number of species, several attempts have been made to subdivide this genus into subgenera or sections. Lambert & Thiery (1921, pp. 377-384; 1924, p. 385) divide this genus into eight sections, distinguished on variable characters, as evidenced by the the fact that different specimens of one species have been assigned to more than one section (Kier, 1957, p. 848). Mortensen (1948, p. 272) grouped these into three subgenera, however, such characters as used by Mortensen are too variable to be of generic distinction (Kier, 1962, p. 107). For the purpose of this website we have divided Echinolampas into four subgenera, using reliable characters.
