Subclass Euechinoidea Bronn, 1860

Diagnosis Crown group Echinoidea with
  • Test composed of just 10 columns of plates
  • Lantern with deep foramen magnum in pyramids (absent in derived irregular echinoids)
  • Perignathic girdle dominated by ambulacral elements (absent in derived irregular echinoids that lack a lantern)
  • Ambulacral plating typically compound with multiple elements fused together (absent in derived irregular echinoids)
  • Sphaeridia present
  • Triphyllous and globiferous pedicellariae generally present
Species Included Clade including all living regular and irregular echinoids except the Cidaroidea
Remarks The following taxa were established on material so poor as to be indeterminate, but which is probably euechinoid:
