Collyropsis Gauthier, 1896, p. 22

Diagnostic Features
  • Test ovate in outline tapering to a point posteriorly; low conical in profile; weak anterior sulcus.
  • Apical disc tetrabasal; elongate and disjunct. Ocular plates II and IV meeting behind genital plate 2; genital plates 1 and 4 abutting and in contact with ocular plate II and IV; catinal plates present, but small and isolated, not forming continuous band between anterior and posterior parts of apical disc.
  • Posterior ambulacra and their ocular plates about midway between anterior part of apical disc and posterior periproct. Posterior oculars not clearly seen and relatively small. No catinal plates between posterior oculars and periproct.
  • All five ambulacra flush adapically, narrow and with small, oblique pore-pairs. Paired ambulacra with plates about twice as wide as tall; relatively dense.
  • Ambulacrum III weakly sunken at ambitus and forming a distinct groove adorally.
  • Periproct posterior on short truncated face of test; subcircular.
  • A small number of enlarged pore-pairs adorally with some offset of pore-pairs close to the peristome. One oral plate in each zone bearing two pore-pairs.
  • Peristome small, circular, downward-facing but slightly inclined towards anterior sulcus.
  • Plastron plating not discernable; fully tuberculate and triangular in shape.
  • Aboral tuberculation of small scattered tubercles set in a groundmass of granules.
Distribution
Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) to Lower Cretaceous (Berriasian), Europe, former Soviet Union.
Name gender feminine
Type
Spatangus carinata Leske, 1778, by monotypy.
Species Included
  • C. carinata (Leske, 1778); Tithonian, Europe.
  • C. ultimus Solovjev, 1971; Berriasian, former Soviet Union.
Classification and/or Status

Irregularia, Stem group Atelostomata, Collyritidae.

Subjective junior synonmy of Cardiopelta Pomel, 1883.

Remarks
Supposedly differs from Cardiopelta by having the periproct opening at the very end of the rostrate posterior. Although this differentiates it from some of the more truncate species included in Cardiopelta, the type species Cardiopelta trigonalis is almost as pointed as Collyropsis carinata. Indeed it seems likely that given study, Desor\'s Collyrites trigonalis will prove to be a junior synonym of Leske\'s Spatangus carinatus, and the two genera will be objective synonyms. The specimen illustrated here comes from the Lambert collection.
