Orbigniana Ebray, 1860, p. 56

[=Spatoclypus Pomel, 1883, p. 51 (objective); Orbignyana Lambert & Thiery, 1924, p. 389 (nomen vanum) ]

Diagnostic Features
  • Test ovate in outline tapering to a blunt point posteriorly. Rather depressed in profile.
  • Apical disc tetrabasal; elongate and disjunct. Ocular plates II and IV and genital plates 1 and 4 separated down the midline by auxiliary plates; catinal plates also forming a short, narrow band to the peripoct. Posterior oculars not preserved but a notch on either side of the periproct marks their position.
  • All five ambulacra flush, narrow and with small, oblique pore-pairs.
  • Periproct ovate and opening in anal sulcus which extends to the ambitus.
  • Phyllodes weakly developed adorally with some offsetting of pore-pairs close to the peristome and demiplates.
  • Peristome small, circular, downward-facing and a little depressed.
  • Plastron plating not discernable.
  • Aboral tuberculation of small scattered tubercles set in a groundmass of granules.
Distribution Middle Jurassic (Bajocian), Europe.
Name gender feminine
Type Collyrites ebrayi Cotteau, 1872, p. 168, by original designation.
Species Included
  • S. ebrayi (Cotteau, 1872); Bajocian, France.
  • S. canaliculata (Quenstedt, 1852); Upper Bajocian, Germany, Poland.
  • S. klairi Vadet & Remy, 2004; Lower Bajocian, France.
Classification and/or Status Irregularia, Stem group Atelostomata; Pygorhytidae.
Remarks Easily distinguished from all other irregular echinoids with a disjunct apical disc by the presence of a well-developed anal sulcus. Similar to Hyboclypus but in that genus the posterior oculars are in direct contact with genital plates 1 and 4. Here they are separated with intervening catenal plates. Vadet & Remy (2004) provide a detailed description of the type species.
