Push Cores are used by Alvin to collect deep-sea sediments. The core is embedded up to the point of the white tape line and then removed and stored in Alvin's collection basket. The sediment is removed on the deck of Alvin's supporting vessel and preserved in formalin. The animals are extracted from the mud in the laboratories of The Natural History Museum and identified using high-power, interference contrast microscopy.
